Upstate Warrior Solution Leadership Update
I hope everyone is having a great October. Hard to believe summer is over and fall is here! I would like to provide a short update this month on two things we are working on currently at a regional level, which will have state and national level implications as well:
1. Operation Deep Dive – we are one of 12 communities across the country that are part of a national level study on veteran suicide. We have formed a Community Action Team and have been meeting monthly for the last quarter, and the team is composed of Upstate county coroners, local healthcare system reps, the Veterans Affairs Healthcare system, funeral home leaders, law enforcement, and mental health service providers. The endstate of Operation Deep Dive is to identify all veterans and service members in the Upstate who have taken their lives, and dig into their backgrounds in order to more fully understand the WHY behind their suicide. This study is being run in partnership with the University of Alabama (Go Tigers!) and America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP) from Augusta, GA. We will publish results and outcomes of this study as it progresses over the next few years.
2. Mayors Challenge – we are leading efforts in our community to bring an end to veterans homelessness in the Upstate. We are partnering with the United Housing Connections, our local HUD funded Continuum of Care (COC) responsible for coordinating this work, as well as all of our Public Housing Authorities, select Upstate Mayors’ offices, housing centric non-profits, and the Veterans Administration. In reality, we are not far off from having all the resources in place in order to make this a reality. No other communities in the state of South Carolina (SC) have been able to stake this claim, so our aim is to have the Upstate lead this mission.
Thank you for your continued support. Please call me at 864-520-2073 if you or your organization would like to get more involved with either of these efforts.
Thanks for your support!
